Smell is a learned process shaped by language, experience and genetics. The fields of aromatherapy and therapy with oils represent a complex blend of basic sciences and clinical medicine. Botany, geography, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, toxicology, genetics, immunology, psychology and various medical specialties all should be studied to a certain extent in order to achieve a knowledge base sufficient to use essential oils safely. Western medicine is very gradually integrating aromatherapy and other healing arts as well as traditional Chinese medicine into clinical practice.
