Smell is a learned process shaped by language, experience and genetics. The fields of aromatherapy and therapy with oils represent a complex blend of basic sciences and clinical medicine. Botany, geography, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, toxicology, genetics, immunology, psychology and various medical specialties all should be studied to a certain extent in order to achieve a knowledge base sufficient to use essential oils safely. Western medicine is very gradually integrating aromatherapy and other healing arts as well as traditional Chinese medicine into clinical practice. The educational links provided here are a simplistic start to self education. Learning can be a wonderfully exciting excursion. Bon voyage.
