The caloric restriction effect of resveratrol (3,5,4’-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene) is significant. If you are not drinking wine for the resveratrol and anthocyanins, then drink a berry fruit juice, such as white or green tea and blueberry, which can be found combined in some juice products. Green tea with epigallocathingallate (EGCG) is high in lignans but low in isoflavonoids, which are polyphenols. Both resveratrol and allocatechin-gallate, a major antioxidative green tea polyphenol, exerting inhibitory effects on diverse cellular events associated with cancer of the prostate (Sartor, 2004; Stewart, 2003).

The wine industry has utilized essential oils of thyme, clove, cinnamon, and tea tree in concentrations ranging from 100 to 500 parts per million (ppm) to eliminate a wide range of postharvest pathogens on harvested grapes such as the fungus Botrytis cinerea (Arras, 2001). Some juice products contain essential oils of lemon and orange, sources of d-limonene that may work via inhibition of p21-dependent signaling and apoptosis resulting from induction of the transforming growth factor beta-signaling pathway (Kaji, 2001). D-limonene metabolites also cause G1 cell cycle arrest, inhibit posttranslational modification of signal transduction proteins, and cause differential expression of cell cycles. That means d-limonene helps regulate cells as they replicate in their life cycle to maintain the reproduction of healthy normal cells throughout the body (Reddy, 1997).

Essential Oils Are Generally Regarded as Safe

The essential oils of spices are used for cooking, just as any other generally regarded as safe (GRAS) essential oil for human consumption. The list of GRAS essential oils is available in Section 21CFR182.20 of the Federal Code of Regulations. A good guideline for cooking is one drop of essential oil for each teaspoon of dry spice in a recipe.

Labeling for cooking oils is different than aromatherapy. Note that black pepper oil does not contain piperine, so it lacks the “pepper bite.” Essential oil of black pepper when diffused has been shown to reverse the paralysis of swallowing defects secondary to stroke.

Essential oil of black pepper also blocks substance P, which is a mediator of painful sensations pathways. Oils from herbs such as peppermint and spearmint are very commonly used in the  fragrances and flavorings industry. The fragrances and flavorings industry synthesizes tastes and smells for a worldwide market of products, utilizing essential oils and the phytomolecular chemical constituents of essential oils from plants. Since essential oils are classified by the FDA as foods, many of these oils and forms of them have been incorporated into our food and household product chain extensively for years. Research undertaken by the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials studies and documents the effects of these natural and synthetic additives while investigating how to keep them safe for human consumption.
