Ginger Essential Oil

“Topical and inhalational applications of essential oils of ginger eliminates the dreaded risks associated with PONV, surgery patients can recover from anesthesia comfortably. Costs come down. Patient satisfaction goes up.”

Advanced education in clinical aromatherapy led Dr Geiger to prescribe essential oil of ginger to be used to prevent postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) for my anesthesia patients since 2004.  This groundbreaking article, The Essential Oil of Ginger, Zingiber Officinale, and Anesthesia was published in the International Journal of Aromatherapy 2005.

This article reviews key aromatic science human clinical studies that document the safe and effective use of essential oils for the elderly. Supplementation with essential oils for seniors has many benefits.

Dementia is an ever growing concern

Alheizmer’s dementia research is also growing by leaps and bounds. Improved accuracy of diagnosis and treament is being implemented yet there is so much that is still unknown and not actively being studied. The link below to my recently published article arises from my interest as an anesthiolgist caring for patients with dementia and as a member of a family with a family memeber that has advanced dementia. My interest in reading as many of the newest articles of the essential oils and aromatic science and aromatherapy has shown me that there are numerous essential oils which could possibly function similarliy to the medications that are prescribed for early onset memory loss.

Increase Patient Satisfaction

Increased Patient Satisfaction

The resulting clinical impression implies increased
patient satisfaction and outcomes, and warrants further evaluation as well
as consideration for change in the anesthetic perioperative assessment and
management of PONV. These findings are similar to a previous study
demonstrating the need for less intravenous antinausea medication during
the recovery period in those patients who received ginger powder Z. officinale
(Philips et al., 1993). Reducing the incidence of nausea by approximately
30%, if reproducible, is noteworthy. Perhaps other patients having fewer risk
factors for nausea would benefit from application of ginger oil alone. Ginger
oil effectively treats the three major components of nausea related to surgical
interventions: general anesthetic agents, narcotics, and motion sickness.
These improved results over previous clinical investigations using powered
ginger root taken as an oral premedication (Eberhart et al., 2003; Morin et al.,
2004) are possibly due to the following combined effects: Therapeutic success
may be attributed to the learned smell associated with ginger aromatherapy,
utilizing the mind-body suggestion and guided imagery perioperatively; the
increased potency of the essential oil of ginger Z. officinale as compared to
other preparations as well as the method of application; the combined nasal
and transdermal administration of the essential oil of ginger.
