Skin Care Makes Good Sense

Spas take their skin services very seriously. Skin is the body’s largest organ. Skin that is very dry can benefit from certain foods taken internally and specific types of supplements, lotions, and oils applied externally. Skin becomes thinner, less elastic, and drier with age. Aging also decreases production of natural oils of the skin. You can protect skin from within with dietary intake of foods rich in antioxidants, such as fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, and especially foods that contain certain types of healthy fat, such as monounsaturated fat from olive oil. It also helps to increase your intake of omega-3s from salmon, walnuts, and white and green teas. Eliminating polyunsaturated vegetable oil and partially hydrogenated oils from the diet is a good dietary strategy for healthy skin. Find skin care products that are designed to complement your inner beauty.

I use doTERRA skin care products with certified pure and therapeutic grade essential oils because they are “all natural” preparations avoiding synthetic compounds.

Carrier Oils Phytomolecules

The phytomolecules in medicinal plants protect and heal skin. Oils from plants can reduce the undesirable effects of aging and the harmful effects of the sun, as well as reduce swelling and redness caused by inflammation. Jojoba oil, from a desert shrub, is 50% of the jojoba seed by weight. Jojoba oil consists of esters and is nongreasy. The oil is a straight chain ester made up of 35 to 46 carbons. Each molecule consists of a fatty acid and a fatty alcohol joined by an ester bond. Jojoba oil has significant anti-inflammatory properties and forms a smoothing, healing coating on the skin. It is a natural preservative and can be blended in conjunction with essential oils as a versatile carrier oil for dry skin, normal skin, oily skin, and mature skin. The term “vulnerary” refers to healing or treating wounds with a preparation, plant, or drug used to cure them. It comes from the Greek word vulnus, meaning “wound.”

DoTERRA Fractionated coconut oil FCO is the best because it is a little different than whole coconut oil. Many people are familiar with whole coconut oil which is a solid at room temperature but do not have experience with fractionated coconut oil. Carrier oils consist of a class of molecules called fatty acid triglycerides which means they contain three, long-chain fatty ester groups. Most all plant derived carrier oils consist entirely of what are called “unsaturated” fatty acid triglycerides which means they have one or more carbon-carbon double bonds in their long fatty ester side chains which are typically 16 to 20+ carbon units long. The double bonds in these side chains are susceptible to oxidation over time and their reactions with oxygen are what produce the rancid odor that you may have noticed in your carrier oils when they get a few months old. Whole coconut oil also has some quite long unsaturated fatty acid triglycerides (which is why it is a solid at room temperature).

DoTERRA Fractionated coconut oil FCO with the pump is different in that it has a relatively high percentage of shorter length (C8, C10 ), completely saturated (no double bonds) triglycerides. These smaller fatty acid triglycerides are separated from the whole coconut oil to give us what is known as fractionated coconut oil. The separation process is non-chemical and involves a simple physical separation process so there are no chemical residues to worry about. Any pure vegetable oil can be used as a carrier oil.

Tamanu (Calophyllum inophyllum) oil, another fine example of a carrier oil, useful on burns, and radiation burns in particular. It contains terpenes, sterols, and vitamin F from fatty acids, plus the flavonoid coumarinic derivatives. Interestingly, tamanu is a member of the mangostin family (like the mangosteen fruit), which is rich in xanthones and also has strong anti-inflammatory properties. Skin acts as a reservoir for the chemicals and phytomolecules of all skin-care products and treatments, which allows for prolonged local and possibly systemic effects from gradual reabsorption of those chemicals and phytomolecules. Choose carefully which ingredients you place on the skin.

Botanical Holistic Body Care

Learn to love your skin with essential oils. It is wonderful to mix a rich, long-lasting base note essential oil, a middle note essential oil, and an effervescent top note essential oil with jojoba in order to create the best blend for your skin type. Certain essential oils with specific properties work better than others for each of the four skin types. They can be applied mixed with moisturizer or as a compress. Use therapeutic-grade essential oils diluted with jojoba or rose hip seed oil that has been analyzed to ensure purity. Awaken your skin to botanical holistic healing.

Anti-aging moisturizer from doTERRA with the CPTG® essential oils of Lavender, Jasmine, Geranium, and Frankincense to moisturize and soften skin while providing anti-aging benefits.

  • Contains aqueous extract of dormant Summer Snowflake (Leucojum aestivum) bulbs to promote a clearer, more even skin tone
  • Contains ingredients that nourish the skin, helping reduce the appearance of wrinkles
  • Olive Fruit extract is specifically designed for moisturizing and overall skin care
  • Peptides help to firm and smooth skin, improving skin tone and texture and helping reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

Mature and dry skin types associated with aging and arid climate commonly benefit from revitalizing essential oil remedies. A mixture of ylang ylang, Lavandula angustifolia, and patchouli or vanilla oils in a solution with a dilutional carrier or messenger oil is a wonderful dry skin therapy. Oily skin may benefit from astringent essential oils such as tea tree, geranium, and German chamomile. Sensitive skin types may benefit from lavender, rose, and neroli. Products and recipes are abundant but be certain to “patch test” each product or blend you create on the skin somewhere besides the face.

Restore your eyelids using essential oils. How cool is that! My wife and I use the doTERRA’s anti-aging eye cream with the super cool mini roller ball applicator. doTERRA Anti-Aging Eye Cream combines clinically proven ingredients with CPTG® essential oils of Frankincense, Ylang Ylang, and Blue Tansy to target the signs of aging around the delicate eye area, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over time. This innovative formula moisturizes, decreases the appearance of dark circles, and improves skin firmness and tone.

Skin is inhabited by two bacterial groups, resident and transient. Some skin-cleansing products contain essential oils that have been shown to decrease but not totally remove both groups of skin bacteria. Doctors, nurses, food handlers, and people who provide spa treatments must wash their hands between contacts to prevent transfer of pathologic skin-contaminating bacteria. Freshen up with essential oils on the hands while traveling. Hand washing with skin-cleansing products containing essential oils is effective and refreshing.

We all need something pleasant and non-toxic yet powerful enough to clean our hands, whenever and where ever we are. So doTERRA came up with hand sanitizing blend of essential oils in a convienient spray bottle of the On Guard Protective Spray blend of essential oils. Rosemary Wild Orange Clove Eucalyptus and Cinnamon from both the leaf and bark.
